Black Base Card - Watercolor & Alcohol Ink

by - August 01, 2018

Hello beauties! Spellbinders recently sent me so goodies to play with from the incredible artist Stephanie Low who's designed stamps and dies like the one you see here. This crystal die is pretty much what dreams are made of. Seriously, it's heavenly and I had to reign in my ideas so that I wouldn't go crazy trying to cram them all onto one card. I'm thoroughly happy with the end result and I'd like to share a bit about how I achieved it!

I first used Ranger Alcohol Inks in Aqua, Pool, and Eggplant on some Alcohol Ink Card Stock to achieve this swirly, icy, crystal color you see in the die. Before it dried I also added some silver metallic additive to give some shine to the piece.

I then die cut the main crystal die twice out of 110lb white card stock and glued one on top of the other to create some dimension. Once I finished with that I chose a spot on the alcohol ink background that I loved and glued the die cuts down to it.

Finally for the piece, I simple used some fine tip scissors and cut around the crystal as close as I could to the layered die cuts giving the illusion that the alcohol ink piece was made to fit this die cut, when really its just a piece of a much bigger alcohol ink pattern. This gives you the opportunity to decide which portion of the alcohol ink piece you like best.

I then cut a piece of black card stock to A2 size (4 1/4" x 5 1/2") and used My Favorite Things Label Maker Love sentiment set to create the sentiment You Are Beautiful and then fussy cut that out. To create the silver splatter, I used Finetec metallic watercolors and sopped up a large round brush. I then tapped the paintbrush against my finger and moved it around the card front to create random splatter marks about and let it dry.

Finally, I adhered the crystal die cut and sentiment with foam tape and added some ivory gems from Pretty Pink Posh to add even more shine.

I hope that you have enjoyed learning a little bit about how I created this eye catching black base card! I will see you very soon!
