Altenew + The Daily Marker Color Therapy Blog Hop & Giveaway
Hello beautiful people! Today's blog hop is extra exciting because Altenew has partnered with Kathy Racoosin and The Daily Marker to bring you inspiration from lots of artists and makers, and prizes to boot! I colored up a couple of my favorite images from Altnew today using two different techniques. My favorite medium (at the moment) is watercolor. I've been slowly learning by watching YouTube videos and tons of practice. But, when I went to The Daily Marker road trip at Lawn Fawn in September, Kathy gave some great tips on using (SHARP) colored pencils on top of alcohol ink markers so I knew I wanted to use that technique today, too.
First up, we've got this daisy from the Flower Garden. I love the movement of the petals and how they radiate from the center. I chose to use Altenew Artists Markers in the Summer Afternoon set of colors. These colors range from a very pale yellow to a medium brown color. When I was learning color combinations with alcohol ink markers I was always afraid to mix color families like yellow and brown, but it really does make all the difference in making a piece look more realistic.
Altenew is giving away a $30 gift certificate to 5 lucky winners and Kathy from The Daily Maker is also giving away her 5”x7” original watercolor artwork(including a custom frame). Please leave a comment on the Altenew Card Blog by 11/22/2019 for a chance to win. We’ll also draw a winner to receive a $15 gift certificate from the comments left on each designer’s blog on the blog hop list below. All winners will be announced on the Altenew blogs on 11/24/2019.
After I added the base color and some details with the markers, I used colored pencils to shade in some depth to the petals. This allows a feeling of movement and dimension throughout the image. However, this would not be a Kathy Racoosin coloring event if I didn't mention to MAKE SURE YOUR PENCILS ARE SHARP. And Kathy's version of "sharp" differed from my version until she showed me what she meant, so be sure to check out her blog for more info on that!
My next image also comes from the Flower Garden stamp set. This stamp set is especially great for coloring since there are several outline floral images included. This time I used the Altenew watercolor pan set to create a softer, less detailed image.
Special Offer: Receive a FREE brand new Like Family Stamp Set($4.99 value) with every order from 11/18/2019 at 12:01 am EST until 11/29/2019 at 11:59 pm EST. The free gift will be added to cart automatically. While supplies last.
This small rose is my favorite of the entire set. I love that it includes a small leaf coming off of the stem and that the petals in the center are still mostly closed in while the outer petals are fully bloomed. It gives such an interesting shape that I find so beautiful. To begin, I use a watercolor pan with full pigment (meaning almost no water added) to outline the base of one petal. I then dip the brush in clean water, dab it lightly on a paper towel, and drag some of that pigment up petal. I repeat this process 3-4 times for each petal, always ending with mostly water and very little pigment. That's how I create the pretty faded look to the petals.
I hope that you've enjoyed learning a little bit about the techniques I used today. If you haven't yet, be sure to play along with #thedailymarker30day challenge on Instagram! We're on day 18 today. Be sure to leave a comment on each stop along the hop today for your chance to win one of many prizes today. Your next stop on the hop is the wonderful Anna Komenda.

ReplyDeleteYour coloring is lovely. I need to watch more you tube. I tried adding pencil to marker once but it didn't look anywhere near that good.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous colouring, Ashlea! I love the little pink rose! Your work is totally inspiring! Thanks so much for sharing and all the helpful hints!
ReplyDeleteWow, coloured pencils on top of the alcohol markers?! I have to try that, though like you, I seem to like watercolouring more. Both flowers were coloured beautifully but that rose has my heart, it's SOO beautifully watercoloured. Thanks for the tip on using full pigment at the base. I love watercolouring but I am still learning and not quite at the level I would like to be as yet, thanks for the link to Kathy's blog with that tip, I will check it out for sure. Thanks for taking the time to share your beautiful creations with us today Ms. Ashlea.
ReplyDeleteMasterful coloring and shading - stunning!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Ashlea! I love the yellow colors, so bright and vibrant!
ReplyDeleteI like the second technique, with the watercolored rose embossed in gold the best but the first one is good too. I am just drawn to the rose more. I think because of the sparkly gold! Your hues in the first flower are really nice and I never thought to combine the brown with the yellow so that is a great tip! Thanks for sharing your wonderful work!
ReplyDeleteI will have to try pencils on top of markers too. Love your coloring !
ReplyDeleteAmazing coloring! I love the rose.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers! I just started using colored pencils with my markers. They work really well together. Thanks for sharing.
